Note: This post does contain spoilers. Along with the general episode recap,  one minor & one major spoiler are shared. Spoiler warnings are given before each reveal.

Ep 1: The Break

We begin in 1978 New Brunswick just outside Dorchester penitentiary, with an unknown man running. We hear sirens, dogs barking and see police roadblocks. It seems a prison break in full swing.

Switching scenes we meet Det. Roy Patterson( Paul Gross) who's in a hotel room with his ex wife. Their conversation gives us a little insight into Patterson's past, whilst a news report of a prison break plays in the background.

As the manhunt unfolds, escapee David Slaney ( Allan Hawco) gets a ride with an unnamed trucker.

Flashback 1972:  Two men on a boat. One is Slaney, the other, we discover, is his life long friend Brian Hearn ( Eric Johnson). The men are contemplating buying a boat. Hearn has a plan to make money and wants Slaney in on it.

It becomes clear that the truck pickup was planned, and the trucker drops Slaney off at a pre-arranged place, to lay low and wait until he's contacted again.

Patterson looks over old case files relating to Slaney & Hearn.

Meanwhile at a DEA office the agents are discussing ongoing cases.& we meet Agent KC Williams ( Enuka Okuma) A smart, sassy, black, female agent...

Hidden in a trailer, Slaney cleans himself up & makes contact with his old friend Hearn. The phone call between the two gives us lots of background info & shows us how different the  past few yrs have been for Hearn.

Enter Cyril Carter (Greg Bryk)

Hearn & Carter have obviously been working together but operations are not going smoothly of late! Carter has himself a new boat & a new, young, blonde crewmate - Ada ( Tori Anderson)  She's clearly smitten ( or acting like it?) with Cyril, but Hearn is not pleased to have an unknown face in on his operations.

Right off the bat you can tell this is gonna be another one of Gregs delightful  'crazy is more fun characters'  Cyril appears to be consistently drunk or high , maybe both and if the line

"I'm catnip for the ladies........"

is anything to go by, fans/ viewers are in for a real treat with Gregs portrayal of this role!

BTW - That catnip line, which plays so perfectly, was an 'in the moment, improvised addition' by Greg.

Patterson introduces himself to Agent Williams & it seems like cases they're both looking at are connected. They agree to keep things just between them, for the moment.

Minor Spoiler Ahead:

The trucker who helped Slaney escape is on the phone with Detective Pattinson! Are these two working together?

Another flashback scene with Slaney, Jennifer(Charlotte Sullivan) & a baby, which reveals more about Slaneys life prior to his arrest.

Hearn is not happy to find Ada making herself at home in his house but Carter just wants everyone to get along... ..

Did I spot a little insecurity creeping in when Carter thought Hearn might be flirting/ making moves on Ada?

Hearn & Carter leave to take care of a 'little business' ....... &  the darker side of their business is revealed.

Slaney has his own problems as someone gave his location up to the cops & he has to make another run for it.

His trucker buddy appears and wants to help, but Slaney ignores him & it's someone else who picks him up!

**SPOILER WARNING**

It's a familiar face that picks up Slaney. What's going on here?

**SPOILER AHEAD**

Det. Patterson is driving the car & Slaney gets in willingly!  During the drive it becomes clear that Slaneys breakout was planned  by/with Patterson. The 2 are working together but, unbeknownst to Slaney, Pattison is working on his own in this. The plan was not sanctioned by Police dept.   so they  believe his breakout to be  real & now have mounted a full scale manhunt for David Slaney. As the two men continue their argument over the plan, there is a spectacular car crash...........

As Hearn, Carter & Ada enjoy  time in the sun, what will become of Patterson & Slaney?
